Follow your heart?

Most of us are told while growing up that we can do whatever our heart desires. Or, when we had major decisions to make, “Follow your heart.” Is this the correct, biblical, advice to give someone? What if you should not follow that advice? What if giving that advice is misleading our youth? What if that is one of the reasons for our societal morals decaying? God has a clear stance on this issue.     Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Genesis 8:21 (NIV) “….even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood…..” Throughout my life I have relied too much on my heart’s desire.   My heart has mislead me in many different circumstances, relationships, friendships, and deciding what to do in various situations through my life. Yet we so often hear, or even give this advice. We are quick to do what our heart tells us to do, even if we know in our minds that it is wrong. Why? Bec...

Sinking in Debt?

Romans 3:19-24 “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law we become conscious of our sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Our economy is driven by debt. Countries borrow from other countries. People borrow from other people. Through life you may accumulate debt by going to school, buying a vehicle, buying a house, furnishings, etc. There are people who accumulate so much debt, that they will never be able to repay it in their l...

Choice Obedience

Deuteronomy 30:11 (NIV) “Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.” Moses is talking to the Israelites before entering into the promise land, he just finished laying out all of the laws, blessings, curses etc. How often do we hear people say it is too hard to do something that they are told to? I know from being a kid and having siblings that this is a common natural thought. Moses jumps out ahead of that thought before he is finished speaking to tell us that it is not too difficult to do what has been commanded by God. He continues on to sum up and reiterate in verses 15 and 16, “See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands and decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” The thing is, God always gives us a choice, it is our ...

Life of humility

Proverbs 29:23 “ Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor. ” I have seen this many times in my life, at work, in school, and playing sports. In a variety of different ways I have seen people who think they are smarter, more qualified, faster, stronger, or just better than others. Sometimes when the time has come that they are humbled the fall is not graceful. The word pride here can be equivalent of someone who is bombastic, boastful, arrogant, or conceited. In college I got to see first-hand someone who thought they were way better than others because they carried a 4.0 GPA. Then the time came where they received a B and they did not handle it well, they acted like their life was over. I have seen many athletes who did not train hard and were bested by those who were less gifted, but worked harder. In this life, everything that we do we should approach it with humility and work hard towards accomplishing our goals. We have to stay humble and make...
