What are you building with?

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 (NIV)
"By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved - even though only as one escaping through the flames."

As a Christian, at some point in our life, someone has laid that foundation of Jesus Christ. If we do nothing else after we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are still saved by the grace of God. From the time the foundation is laid we are responsible for what we build on top of the foundation. Our every belief, deed and decision is being laid on top of that foundation. Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NIV) "For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil."

On that foundation we will lay our beliefs, and it is important to get what we believe from the bible. The world will try to sway you in other directions but if we are basing our beliefs off of what the scriptures say, then we know we are building with things that will endure the testing of fire. If we are basing our beliefs on worldly points of views, or adopting the societal view of right and wrong, we are building with hay and straw and wood. The same applies to our reasons behind our actions. Though others may not see your true reason behind your actions, God sees all and it will be shown and tested. If we have selfish motives or are doing it begrudgingly, those too will be burned up.

If we know we should do something we should be happily doing it. We should be reading our bibles so we know how to act in every situation. If we are building with the guidance of the Lord's word than we can be sure that we are building with gold and silver and precious stones. We should be prayerfully approaching situations, leaning on our blueprint (Bible) to guide us in our building, and happily be doing work for the Lord. We should want to be building for that day when our works will be tested.

Challenge: Take rest in the fact that accepting Christ as Lord and savior, is all we need to get into heaven. However, do not sit idol but, start building on that foundation with deeds, prayers, and beliefs made of gold and silver and precious stones. That will last through the testing of fire.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NIV)
