Liberty or Death

Here in the USA we are blessed with freedoms that citizens of some other countries do not have. We have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to bear arms, and the freedom to elect our leaders. As we celebrate our country’s independence this week let us take time to be thankful for the freedoms that we enjoy in this country.  Pray to God that he would bless our country, be with our elected leaders, and that we as a country would turn to him as the supreme ruler in our lives.

Acts 13:39 (NIV)
“Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.”

Even though we are blessed with many freedoms here in the USA, our constitution does not provide us freedom from sin. As we look across our country we see uprisings of many sinful actions. The first year after Roe vs. Wade took affect conceptions rose by 30% in America yet births actually fell by 6%. One baby was aborted for every four babies born alive. People were and are using abortions as a form of birth control. In 1980 there were 1.6 million babies aborted which was one for every 2.25 babies born alive. If you do not think that this is a version of premeditated murder, take a look at Jeremiah1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” God knows each baby before they begin to form in the mother’s womb.  But between 1970 and 2014, 44.5 million babies have been aborted, and the majority of our country and leaders support that.

In 2003 our country’s supreme court voted 6-3 to legalize homosexuality in our country. Homosexuality is clearly condemned in the bible in Leviticus 18:22, 1 Timothy 1:10, and in 1 Corinthians 6:9. Yet we are seeing pressures, even from the Pope (which is man and not God) to accept such sin in the church and even in the pulpit. We are not free from sin in our country, but there is one who frees us from sin, no matter where you live. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, to clothe us in righteousness us before God, which otherwise we were unable to obtain. Only through Jesus are we set free from the bondage of sin and now are called to be slaves to righteousness (Romans 6:18). For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Challenge: Take time this week to praise God for giving us freedom from sin and pray for your nation and community.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NIV)
