Broken Cisterns

I first would like to apologize to all my readers for my hiatus. I have been consumed by a topic that was brought up to me at church that a lot of churches partake in and others do not. It is a topic that is not directly taught on in the Bible so it consumed my time and studies even more than I anticipated.

Jeremiah 2:13 (NIV)
"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”

I look around today and see that this is true today. The Living God is the spring of living water, he will refresh us, renew our spirits, and gives us life abundantly. People are creating their own gods on a daily basis. Just today I went into a co-workers office and she was playing with a rock. I asked “does that help with stress.” She went on a long explanation about the different stones in her office and their powers, what they gave her and what they protected her from. However she wants nothing to do with God. People all throughout history have made up rituals and gods and deities that suit how they want to live. They refuse the true God because they do not want to accept something that tells them what they are doing is wrong, what they enjoy doing is wrong.

When I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I was enjoying the sin that I was living in. Jesus Christ changed me and gave me a refreshing taste of the living water that he is. I know that it can be hard to admit what you enjoy doing is wrong and have to face those facts. The truth is that those things that we, or others partake in that is contradictory to the word of God are broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Water allows things to grow and have life. Pouring water into a broken cistern is like pouring our lives into something that contradicts God’s word. It is pointless, unbeneficial, and can take a toll on your body and mind.  Now days when I succumb to temptation, I look back and ask myself, “Why did you do that? It was pointless and unproductive.” I know that it seems like a sacrifice to give up something you like to do because it contradicts the Bible, however it is nothing compared to the sacrifice Jesus Christ made to save each and every one of us who call upon his name and accept him as our Lord and savior.

Challenge: Examine what you are putting you time and efforts toward. Are you visiting a broken cistern or are you God, the spring of living water.
